A Pocket Full of Posies is a site specific work that exhumes the history of Surgery Gallery and Pitfield Street, where a plague pit was hastily formed during the 1665-6 Great Plague of London. The installation speculates on the mineral afterlives of those laid to rest, wherein hasty burials and subsequent decomposition will have given way to nutrient rich “necrosol”. After the burials subsided, Plague pits such as Pitfield’s produced rich pockets of verdant planting as nitrogen from bodies made its way into the soil. In this disturbed ground, flora could grow freely, producing unique flourishing amongst wider death and decay.
