For Studio Futurall in collaboration with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Mixed textile series of 3, 2025
Banner series co-designed by young researchers in Cambridgeshire, working in collaboration with Studio Futurall to imagine future post-carbon towns. Taking inspiration from the Fitzwilliam Museum's collection of medieval manuscripts, the project mobilizes archival imagery of medieval pre-carbon towns to speculate on future, post-carbon towns. Each banner imagines a different scenario, from living in fear of nature to embracing play and abundance.
Over the course of the Fitz Youth Day we paraded the banners through the campus, taking up space and encouraging the reimagining of our urbanscapes. Attendees of the Youth Day were further encouraged to co-create a new banner through collaborative drawing.
Each banner is formed from upcycled linen which is printed unto using Solarfast and cyanotype to reproduce archival imagery, which I then embroidered unto. Organza panels "illuminate" these ideas much like gold leaf illuminated the source imagery. Each banner also bears the name of the young researchers whose ideas informed the design.
